Salesforce Record Type

Record type is a point and click tool provided by Salesforce which helps you to configure different business processes, assign page layouts, and pick-list values for standard and custom objects. Salesforce Record types can be assigned to user profiles and can be used in different ways. For example

1. Showing Different page layouts for one object based on certain criteria.
2. Displaying different picklist values based on the user criteria.
3. Managing multiple department within the same Salesforce instance.
4. Set the layouts based on a pick list values etc.

We can achieve the above important functionality without writing apex code or visualforce page.

Record Types can be created for all Salesforce objects(standard and custom). But for the following objects a business process must be first created before a record type.

1. Lead
2. Case
3. Opportunity
4. Solution

A Business Process captures the life cycle of leads, opportunities, cases, or solutions. It references a standard picklist field and the values can be customized.

If there is an organization which deals in lets say Furniture and Home Appliance having them as different divisions with separate sales teams, it is possible to have a single Salesforce instance to manage them both. In this case record type can govern the access to records to respective team members. The senior executive can however still see a consolidated pipeline.

1. A Standard record type field gets created whenever we create a record type on an object.
2. Whenever we clone a record, the new record gets a record type of clone record.
3. These are majorly used to manage different different business processes.
4. only admin and user with customized application can create record type.
